One of the reasons I struggle with this business sometimes, is its passive nature. Hang on you say, isn’t passive income the whole point? Well, yes it is. But we’ve been doing this for a while now, and one thing hasn’t changed. I still wake up every morning, wanting to do something to advance at least one of our e-commerce sites somehow.
Relax, take a deep breath, stay the course
The problem is, that we’re in a stage now where our old sites are ticking away, and some of our new sites are coming up through the ranks, but haven’t quite made it to where they need to be to start ordering their initial product. The problem with SEO, is that if you build too many links too quickly, you can be penalised, so slow and steady wins the race. Because we outsource the link building process, it kind of leaves you “twiddling your thumbs” for awhile, and this rarely sits well with me.
My point is that no matter what stage you’re at in the process of achieving your desired lifestyle, there are stages where the desire to “speed up” the business building process can do more harm than good.
Can’t You Just Build More Sites?
Of course that’s possible, but you never quite know what kind of “logistical load” a site will put on your shipping situation. It’s for this reason that we have decided to only have about 5-6 “focus” sites at a time. We already have other sites waiting in the wings ready to go, but until we know how much product we’ll need to store and be shipping for our focus sites, we have no desire to rank our next lot. The last thing we want is to be victims of our own success.
Get A Hobby!
Fair enough, we do have a great gym, as well as three lagoon pools in our complex here in Bangkok, and there’s no shortage of things to do in this amazing City, but to be honest, none of that compares to building our businesses. Even if we go to the islands for a getaway, after a few days, we both start itching to get back to our businesses and see how far we can take them.
How Is This Relevant To Me?
Well, I can’t tell exactly where you are at in your online business life. You may be just starting out, or maybe you’ve started your first site and are in the ranking period, or maybe you’re well in advance of where we are. Either way, we will all find ourselves in this position at some time, and you have to make sure that you don’t over-think the process, don’t try to speed it up, and don’t panic and think it’s a failure just because you’ve been trying to rank for a week and you’re still not in the top ten for your primary keyword. Relax, take a deep breath, stay the course, and trust that you did the correct keyword research to begin with, make sure you’re not following any “dodgy” link building practices just to try to rank faster, and if you’re really really bored… start another site, write some more content, or take up knitting.
