When you first start thinking about starting a business, it’s easy to think in terms of costs, risk, and potential gain, but when talking with others who are thinking of getting an online business started, it often seems that overcoming the objections of friends and family can be an even bigger hurdle. A couple we met recently here in Bangkok have the exact opposite of family support, in fact, their family seems to want to stage an “intervention” whenever they start talking about the idea of starting a business online. It got to the point where they went to the extreme of moving to Thailand for a few months to clear their heads and try to come up with a plan of how to move forward, without their “anti-support system” clouding their judgment.

We’ve been fortunate enough to have friends and family that have been very supportive (some even displaying our products in their home!) of our entrepreneurial endeavors, and this is a tremendous benefit that we’ve probably taken for granted. Having said that, even when friends and family are supportive, it can be difficult for them to understand (particularly in the early days) that you’d rather spend your spare cash on getting some SEO done rather than going out with them for dinner and a movie! And when you quit your job to go full time into building online businesses, it can literally be years before you are ready to join them in normal social activities, and when you finally do, you might find that you spend a lot more time talking about their job than you do about your business, because it’s not something that they can easily relate to and it is not something you can easily explain.

We love our friends and family a lot and lucky for us we have had their continued support and encouragement, but it’s also important to reach out to others who have either created successful online businesses, or are in the process of doing so. This is even more important if you don’t have any support from your immediate network, not just so that you have someone to turn to for advice, but also because you need to surround yourself with like minded people if you want to succeed. We battled for years without having any mentors or colleagues in the same line of business, and in fact it’s only very recently (through talknbusiness.com) that we’ve made some connections with people who we can really talk to about everything that we do, and it’s amazing how you can build each other up and encourage each other. It can also save you time and money if you can share what is working for you and what isn’t. So whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve been building online businesses for many years, if you don’t have a good support network, make the effort to go out there and make one yourself.
